Bible Question

What Does the Resurrection Mean to Me?

Answer

The resurrection of Jesus Christ offers the promise of salvation and new life to all who believe in Him. Romans 10:9 emphasizes this, stating, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

A particularly profound verse that encapsulates this truth is Romans 8:11:

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.”

Let’s explore the significance of this verse:

  1. The Spirit of Him Who Raised Jesus from the Dead: This phrase identifies God as the source of the resurrection. As John 4:24 states, “God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” Thus, it is God’s Spirit that brought Jesus back to life after His crucifixion and burial.
  2. Is Living in You: This segment reveals that the same Spirit who resurrected Jesus now dwells within every believer. This is the profound mystery Paul mentions in Colossians 1:27: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Jesus Himself promised in John 14:16-17 that the Father would send the Holy Spirit to dwell within His followers, saying, “He lives with you and will be in you.”
  3. He Who Raised Christ from the Dead Will Also Give Life to Your Mortal Bodies Through His Spirit: Paul is addressing those who are alive in their physical bodies. The life referred to here is the spiritual vitality imparted by the Holy Spirit to believers. This life is accessed through faith in Jesus. Romans 10:9 underscores this, affirming that salvation comes through confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection, freeing us from spiritual death.

What Happens When You Believe?

  • Spiritual Transformation: When you place your faith in Jesus, you transition from spiritual death to spiritual life, as John 5:24 asserts, “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
  • The Indwelling Spirit: Upon believing, the Spirit of God comes to reside within you, ensuring that Jesus will “never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). You are marked by Him and sealed with the Holy Spirit, as described in Ephesians 1:13.

Through this divine indwelling, believers are empowered to live a new life, guided and sustained by the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead.
