Bible Question

What Does It Mean To Be Spiritually Dead?

Answer

The Bible tells us what it means to be spiritually dead in Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—”. This means that, like everyone else, you were born spiritually disconnected from God and in need of life. If you’ve ever felt like something essential is missing from your life, this could be the reason why.

Many people are unaware of this, but it traces back to when Adam disobeyed God’s single command: “If you eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you will surely die” (Genesis 2:17). Although Adam didn’t die physically that day—living for another 930 years—he did experience spiritual death. The divine life with which Adam was originally created departed from him. This spiritual death has been inherited by every human being, except for Jesus Christ. Jesus came to break this curse and offer new life to all who believe in Him.

This is why John 3:16 says that anyone who believes in Him will not perish. In this context, “perish” refers to spiritual death.
