Bible Verses – What is Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a serious warning in Scripture. It refers to the deliberate rejection of God’s Spirit and a refusal to recognize Jesus as Lord and Savior. Those who persistently resist the work of the Holy Spirit in their hearts—refusing to believe that Jesus is God’s Son who died and rose for our sins—are cutting themselves off from the very source of forgiveness and eternal life. This is not about occasional doubt or failure, but a hardened, continual rejection of God’s truth and grace.

1. Jesus Forgives All Blasphemy — Except Rejecting the Holy Spirit

Matthew 12:31–32 (NIV 1984)
“And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”

2. The Holy Spirit Convicts the World of Sin (Unbelief)

John 16:8–9 (NIV 1984)
“When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me.”

3. Unbelief  Can Not Be Forgiven, It Must Be Repented Of

John 3:36 (NIV 1984)
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”

4. Rejecting the Testimony of the Holy Spirit Leaves a Person Without Life

1 John 5:10–12 (NIV 1984)
“Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

5. Denying Sin Is Itself Sin

1 John 1:8 (NIV 1984)
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

1 John 1:10 (NIV 1984)
“If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.”

6. Agree or admit you have a sinful nature born spiritually dead – And guess what, Jesus’ death on the cross forgave you.

1 John 1:9 (NIV 1984)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

7. Confessing the Resurrection Brings Life

Romans 10:9–10 (NIV 1984)
“That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

8. Forgiveness Alone Is Not Enough — Resurrection Gives Life

Romans 4:25 (NIV 1984)
“He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”

1 Corinthians 15:17 (NIV 1984)
“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.”

9. Once Christ Is in You, the Holy Spirit Is in You

Romans 8:9–10 (NIV 1984)
“You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”

10. The Only Sin Unto Death Is Persistent Unbelief

1 John 5:16 (NIV 1984)
“If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.”
