Ephesians 1:4–5
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world… In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ…”
🟦 AUDIENCE
Believers in Ephesus—Jewish and Gentile Christians.
Paul is explaining God’s eternal plan to bring Jews and Gentiles together in Christ.
🟪 WHY WAS THIS WRITTEN?
Paul is revealing God’s long-planned purpose:
Jews and Gentiles would become one people in Christ.
The predestination language describes God’s predetermined purpose and destiny for His people in Christ, not individual people being randomly selected for salvation or damnation before they were born.
🟥 THE COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING
This passage is often interpreted:
“Before creation, God individually chose some people to be saved and chose others to be lost.”
But Scripture repeatedly connects God’s choosing and election to peoples, nations, covenant lines, and God’s purpose in salvation history.
The Bible gives us an important example in Jacob and Esau.
🟧 THE BIBLE EXPLAINS ITSELF
Genesis 25:23
“Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated…”
God wasn’t simply talking about two individuals.
He specifically said:
“Two nations.”
“Two peoples.”
Jacob and Esau became the fathers of Israel and Edom.
Malachi 1:2–3
“Yet Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland…”
Malachi explains God’s statement about Jacob and Esau in terms of their national descendants—Israel and Edom.
Paul’s quotation in Romans 9:13 comes from this passage.
🟩 ROMANS 9 IS ABOUT GOD’S CHOICE OF COVENANT LINES
Romans 9 begins with:
Abraham → Isaac → Jacob
Paul is explaining why God’s promise continued through Isaac rather than Ishmael and Jacob rather than Esau.
These choices establish the covenant line through which God’s redemptive plan would move.
Then Paul brings in Pharaoh, whom God used to display His power.
The issue is God’s sovereign right to determine how His redemptive plan unfolds.
🟦 JEWS AND GENTILES
Paul then makes the application clear:
Romans 9:24
“Even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles.”
God’s plan now includes both Jews and Gentiles.
Romans 9:25
“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people…”
The Gentiles—who were not originally God’s covenant people—are now being called God’s people.
🟪 THE MYSTERY REVEALED
Ephesians 3:6
“This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body…”
This is the mystery Paul says was previously hidden:
Gentiles + Israel → one body in Christ.
Ephesians 2:14
“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one…”
Christ has made the two—Jew and Gentile—one.
🟩 WHAT WAS PREDESTINED?
God predestined His purpose:
- Israel would be God’s covenant people
- The Messiah would come through Israel
- Gentiles would be brought into God’s people
- Jews and Gentiles would become one body in Christ
- Those in Christ would be adopted as sons
- Those in Christ would receive an inheritance
👉 The predetermined plan concerns peoples, covenant purposes, and the destiny of those who are in Christ—not God arbitrarily deciding which individuals can believe.
🟥 SALVATION IS THROUGH FAITH
Romans 10:12–13
“For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all… Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
There is no separate salvation for Jews and Gentiles.
There is one Lord, one gospel, and one salvation through faith in Christ.

Biblical election and predestination are centered on God’s choice of peoples, covenant lines, and His redemptive plan in Christ.
Jacob and Esau demonstrate this:
Jacob → Israel
Esau → Edom
And God’s ultimate purpose was:
