Matthew 24:13

🟨 DIFFICULT VERSE
Matthew 24:13

“But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

🟦 AUDIENCE

Jesus speaking to His disciples
Olivet Discourse about end-times tribulation, deception, and persecution

🟪 WHY WAS THIS WRITTEN?

To prepare believers for endurance through intense tribulation and deception, not to redefine how a person is justified before God.

🟥 THE PROBLEM

This is often read as:
“You are only saved if you endure to the very end.”

That turns endurance into the basis of salvation instead of faith under pressure.

🟧 COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Salvation is maintained by surviving until the end.”

That is not the flow of Jesus’ teaching in this passage.

🟩 SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE (MATTHEW CONTEXT)

Matthew 24:21
“For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world…”

Defines the setting as unprecedented tribulation.

Matthew 24:9–10
“You will be persecuted and put to death… many will fall away…”

Shows persecution and falling away under pressure.

Matthew 24:24
“False messiahs and false prophets will appear… to deceive…”

Highlights deception during this period.

🟦 ENDURANCE DURING THE TRIBULATION

Other passages describe a future time of global persecution often referred to as the tribulation, where believers face pressure to reject Christ and worship the beast.

Revelation 14:12
“This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.”

Revelation 13:10
“This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.”

These align with Matthew 24:13 by showing endurance under persecution, not earning salvation.

🟩 ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

Hebrews 12:1
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

James 1:12
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial…”

Endurance is the believer’s response under trial, not the basis of salvation.

🟩 GOD’S CLARITY

Romans 10:9
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart… you will be saved.”

Salvation is received by faith, not completed by endurance.

🟫 WHERE DOES THIS FIT?

Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24–25)
Before the Cross
Speaking about tribulation, deception, persecution, and end-time pressure

KEY POINT

Matthew 24 defines a time of tribulation and deception.
Revelation confirms believers will need endurance during that period.
Endurance is faith under pressure—not the condition that earns salvation.

🟦 ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY

Jesus is warning His disciples to stand firm through end-times tribulation and deception described in Matthew 24, with Revelation confirming endurance under persecution, not teaching that salvation is earned by enduring to the end.
