🟨 DIFFICULT VERSE
Ephesians 5:5
“For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”
🟦 AUDIENCE
Paul is writing to believers in Christ—saved Jews and Gentiles.
But throughout Ephesians, Paul contrasts their new identity in Christ with their old identity and the way the Gentiles outside Christ live.
The key is not:
Jew vs. Gentile.
The key is:
Outside Christ vs. in Christ.
🟪 WHY WAS THIS WRITTEN?
Paul wants believers to understand:
You are no longer who you were.
Therefore, don’t live according to the identity and lifestyle you had before Christ.
Look at the foundation Paul established:
Ephesians 2:1
“You were dead in your transgressions and sins.”
Ephesians 2:5
“God… made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.”
Then:
Ephesians 4:17
“You must no longer live as the Gentiles do…”
And:
Ephesians 4:18
“They are… separated from the life of God…”
Paul is describing the old condition of those outside Christ.
🟥 THE PROBLEM
A legalistic interpretation says:
“Ephesians 5:5 proves that a Christian can lose salvation. If a saved person becomes immoral, impure, greedy, or an idolater, they no longer inherit God’s kingdom.”
But there is a missing step:
Where does Ephesians 5:5 say this person was saved first?
It doesn’t.
It says:
“has no inheritance.”
It does not say:
“had an inheritance and then lost it.”
Those are completely different statements.
🟧 COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING
The argument assumes:
Saved → commits these sins → loses salvation → no longer inherits the kingdom.
But Ephesians never gives us that sequence.
Instead, Paul establishes two identities:
OLD IDENTITY
Dead in sin → separated from God’s life → old self → darkness
NEW IDENTITY
Made alive with Christ → new self → light in the Lord → sealed by the Holy Spirit
The command is:
Live according to your new identity.
🟩 EPHESIANS 4:17–18 — THE OLD IDENTITY
Paul says:
“You must no longer live as the Gentiles do…”
Why?
Because:
“They are… separated from the life of God…”
These Gentiles are characterized by:
- Darkened understanding
- Ignorance of God
- Hardened hearts
- Sensuality
- Impurity
- Greed
This is the old life outside Christ.
Paul tells believers:
Don’t go back to living like that.
🟩 EPHESIANS 4:22–24 — THE NEW IDENTITY
“You were taught… to put off your old self… and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Notice:
Old self → put off
New self → put on
Paul isn’t teaching:
“Behave perfectly so you can remain saved.”
He’s teaching:
“You have been made new—now live according to who you are.”
🟩 EPHESIANS 5:8 — IDENTITY MADE EXPLICIT
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”
This is identity language.
You WERE darkness.
Now you ARE light in the Lord.
Then:
Live like who you are.
Paul doesn’t say:
“If you sin, you become darkness again and lose your salvation.”
🟪 1 CORINTHIANS 6:9–11 — THE SAME PATTERN
Paul gives almost the exact same warning:
1 Corinthians 6:9–10
“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters… nor the greedy… will inherit the kingdom of God.”
That sounds just like Ephesians 5:5.
But then Paul says:
1 Corinthians 6:11
“And that is what some of you were.”
That’s the key.
They were characterized by that old identity.
But now:
“You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
So the pattern is:
WHAT YOU WERE → WHAT CHRIST MADE YOU
Not:
SAVED → SIN → UNSAVED.
🟦 THE INHERITANCE QUESTION
Someone may say:
“But Ephesians 5:5 says they won’t inherit the kingdom!”
Yes.
But notice the difference between:
“has no inheritance”
and
“had an inheritance and lost it.”
Ephesians 5:5 says the former.
And Ephesians 1 says something completely different about believers.
Ephesians 1:13–14
“Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession…”
So:
Those outside Christ → no inheritance.
Those who believe → Spirit guaranteeing their inheritance.
The passage is distinguishing identities, not explaining how a Christian loses salvation.
🟩 THE HOLY SPIRIT CONFIRMS THE NEW IDENTITY
Ephesians 4:30
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
Notice:
A believer can grieve the Spirit.
But Paul still says:
“sealed for the day of redemption.”
He doesn’t say the seal disappears when a believer sins.
The believer’s identity remains established by what God has done in Christ.
🟫 WHERE DOES EPHESIANS 5:5 FIT?
It fits into Paul’s larger message:
You were once dead.
You were once separated from God’s life.
You were once darkness.
You had an old self.
But God made you alive with Christ.
You now have a new self.
You are now light in the Lord.
You have been sealed with the Holy Spirit.
Therefore:
Don’t live according to the old identity.
Ephesians 5:5 is a warning about the old identity and its lifestyle, not a statement that a believer loses salvation every time they commit one of these sins.
⭐ KEY POINT
Ephesians 5:5 is about identity.
Paul is warning saved Jews and Gentiles not to live like the unbelieving Gentiles who are separated from the life of God.
The immoral, impure, greedy, and idolatrous lifestyle belongs to the old identity.
And 1 Corinthians 6:11 gives us the same pattern:
“That is what some of you were.”
You were that.
But now you are washed, sanctified, and justified.
🟦 ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY
Ephesians 5:5 is not teaching that saved people lose their salvation when they sin; Paul is contrasting the old identity of those outside Christ—separated from God’s life—with the new identity of saved Jews and Gentiles who have been made alive in Christ, given the Spirit, and sealed for the day of redemption.
