Revelation 3:16

🟨 DIFFICULT VERSE
Revelation 3:16

“So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

🟦 AUDIENCE

The church in Laodicea
A congregation of professing believers

🟪 WHY WAS THIS WRITTEN?

To rebuke spiritual complacency and call the church to repentance and renewed fellowship with Christ—not to teach the loss of salvation.

🟥 THE PROBLEM

This verse is often read as:

“If I’m spiritually lukewarm, Jesus will reject me and I’ll lose my salvation.”

But Jesus is addressing a complacent church, not explaining how salvation is lost.

🟧 COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Lukewarm Christians are unsaved.”

The warning is about spiritual usefulness and fellowship, not eternal security.

🟩 SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE

Revelation 3:19
“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”

Jesus disciplines those He loves, showing correction rather than condemnation.

Revelation 3:20
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock…”

Jesus calls for restored fellowship with a complacent church.

Hebrews 12:6
“The Lord disciplines the one he loves…”

God’s discipline is evidence of His love, not rejection.

John 15:5
“If you remain in me… you will bear much fruit.”

Christ desires abiding and fruitfulness, not spiritual indifference.

🟩 GOD’S CLARITY

Hot and cold water are both useful.

Lukewarm water is neither refreshing nor healing—it is ineffective.

Jesus is calling His church from complacency back to wholehearted dependence on Him.

🟫 WHERE DOES THIS FIT?

Letters to the seven churches (Revelation 2–3)
Call to repentance before Christ’s coming judgment
Correction of churches, not an explanation of how salvation is lost

KEY POINT

Lukewarmness describes spiritual complacency and ineffectiveness, not the loss of eternal life.

🟦 ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY

Jesus rebukes the Laodicean church for spiritual complacency, calling them to repentance and renewed fellowship, not warning that believers lose salvation.
