🟨 DIFFICULT VERSE
Colossians 1:21–23
“—if you continue in your faith…”
🟦 AUDIENCE
Believers in Colossae
Encouraged to remain grounded in the true gospel
🟪 WHY WAS THIS WRITTEN?
To show believers they are fully reconciled through Christ’s death and to call them to continue growing in the reality of the gospel—Christ in you.
🟥 THE PROBLEM
This is often read as:
“If I don’t continue strong enough, I could lose salvation.”
But Paul is describing continuing in the gospel reality, not maintaining forgiveness.
🟧 COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING
“The ‘if’ means salvation is uncertain.”
Paul is calling believers to remain grounded in what has already been accomplished in Christ.
🟩 SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE
Colossians 1:27
“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
The goal is not just forgiveness, but indwelling resurrection life.
Romans 5:10
“Reconciled… through the death of his Son… how much more… saved through his life!”
Same pattern: death reconciles → life continues salvation experience.
Colossians 2:6–7
“Continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up…”
Continuing = staying rooted, not earning acceptance.
Ephesians 2:8–9
“It is by grace you have been saved, through faith…”
Salvation is received, not maintained by effort.
🟩 GOD’S CLARITY
Paul’s flow:
- Reconciled through Christ’s death (1:21–22)
- Continue in the faith (1:23)
- Experience Christ in you (1:27)
Like Romans 5:10, the movement is from reconciliation to resurrection life.
🟫 WHERE DOES THIS FIT?
Paul combating false teaching in Colossae
Emphasizing Christ’s supremacy and sufficiency
Calling believers into maturity in resurrection life
⭐ KEY POINT
Reconciliation is complete through Christ’s death. Continuing in faith means living in the reality of Christ’s resurrection life within us.
🟦 ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY
Colossians 1:21–23 teaches believers to remain grounded in the gospel and grow into Christ’s resurrection life after being fully reconciled through His death.
